FAIR OAKS, Calif. (Sept. 13, 2013) - The Bella Vista Broncos moved to 2-1 on the season with a 49-13 blowout of the visiting Mesa Verde Mavericks at Bella Vista High School.

Virtually all the Broncos' offense came in the first half as Bella Vista ran up a 42-0 lead in the first two quarters.

Bella Vista scored on its first possession of the game on a six-play drive starting from their own 37.

The Broncos drove to the Mesa Verde 17 where quarterback Austin Harmer carried the ball in with 9:00 showing on the clock. Jimmy Nickell's extra-point kick made it a 7-0 Bronco lead.

Mesa Verde's first possession of the game was short-lived. After getting penalized twice, Maverick quarterback Tanner Minton was intercepted by Bella Vista's Syrus Anderson, giving the Broncos the ball back on Mesa Verde's 35-yard line.

Nickell moved the ball to the Maverick 17 on the first play and Harmer picked up another first down with a run to the Mesa Verde 5-yard line on the second.

Harmer then handed off to Taylor Thomas who took the ball in for the Broncos' second TD. Nickell's kick with 6:56 left in the first quarter made it a 14-0 Bronco lead.

Mesa Verde gained only four yards on its next possession, as the Bella Vista defense forced the Mavericks to punt on a 4th-and-6.

The Broncos took over on their own 32, but gained another five yards on a Mesa Verde penalty that made it a 1st-and-10 on the 37.

On the first play, Andreas Litton took the ball 63 yards down the right side for another Bronco touchdown with 5:48 left in the first quarter. Nickell's PAT made it a 21-0 Bella Vista lead.

Mesa Verde's bad luck continued on their next possession. After only two plays, a fumble by Christian Garcia gave the Broncos the ball back as Litton recovered on the 42-yard line. Bella Vista drove to the Maverick 5-yard line where Syrus Anderson took the ball in with 3:01 left. Nickell was perfect again on the point after to increase the Bella Vista lead to 28-0.

Mesa Verde again had no answer for the Broncos defense on their next possession and the Mavericks were forced to punt. Bella Vista took over on their own 48 and promptly drove in for a fifth consecutive TD.

The Broncos mounted a 10 play drive that landed on the Maverick 3-yard line. Harmer then took the ball in for his second TD of the game. The PAT gave the Broncos a 35-0 lead with 8:55 left in the half.

Mesa Verde started its next drive from their own 12. The Broncos drove them back three yards on the first play and then Minton was intercepted by Anderson on the second, running in for the touchdown with 7:53 left. Nickell added the point after for a 42-0 lead.

The Broncos added one more touchdown in the third as Nickell scored with a Hvidsten kick for a 49-0 lead. Mesa Verde's only touchdowns came in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks scored twice twice for the 49-13 final.

The bulk of Bella Vista's offense came on the ground as the Broncos put up 270 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Harmer passed only twice, completing one pass to Alex Skondras for 21 yards.

The loss dropped Mesa Verde's record to 1-1 on the year.
